Local differences in climate are predictable in a country where the highest point is over 3,000 meters above sea level and the lowest is 40 meters below sea level. On average, however, the temperature hovers in the high 20s°C throughout the year. This is the case on the coastal plain of Santo Domingo, the north coast, and the lowland areas of the Cibao Valley. Climatic variations are most pronounced in the Cordillera Central, where the average temperature in the town of Constanza is 16°C, as well as in the desert regions of the southwest, where temperatures can rise above 40°C. The weather in the Dominican Republic can be roughly divided into two seasons: summer (May to October) and winter (November to April). Note, however, that the temperature varies only by one or two degrees according to the season, although it can get quite chilly during the night in coastal areas around January and February. August, meanwhile, is generally the hottest month.

The wettest period is generally from May to November; this is certainly when Santo Domingo receives most of its rain. However on the north coast around Cabarete, the wettest months tend to be from October to April. The nice thing about the rainy seasons in the Dominican Republic is that the showers rarely last for long (30 minutes is about standard) and are usually followed by bright sunshine.
