Meiji Mura is one of Japan's several outstanding open air museums. Located in Inuyama, one hour outside of Nagoya, it displays over fifty buildings from the Meiji Period, the era which followed the end of Japan's feudal age in 1868 and lasted until Emperor Meiji's death in 1912. The period and its architecture are characterized by a strong influx of Western concepts and techniques.

Even though the Meiji Period has ended less than a century ago, only a few contemporary buildings are surviving in Japan today, as most of them were lost in the war or due to city redevelopment.

Representative buildings from across Japan have been relocated to Meiji Mura in order to preserve the period's architectural and cultural heritage. Among them are the entrance hall of Tokyo's old Imperial Hotel, Kyoto's Francis Xavier's Cathedral, a post office, barber shop, bathhouse and prison. There is also a steam train and streetcar.




Meiji Mura is beautifully located in a vast wooded area next to Iruka Pond. It takes at least half a day to cover all of the museum's exhibits.
