For centuries, Kusatsu's sulfurous, highly acidic (around ph 2) hot spring water has been considered among Japan's best.


The list of the water's health and beauty benefits is long and includes the ease of neuralgia, muscle pain, rheumatism, skin diseases, skin injuries, fatigue and more.

Visitors to Kusatsu can enjoy the hot spring water at ryokan and public bath houses, where baths come in indoor, outdoor, wooden, stone and many more varieties.

Many ryokan open their baths not only to staying guests (usually for free and around the clock), but also to the general public during daytime and against an admission fee of typically 500 to 1000 Yen.

In addition to the ryokan baths, there are multiple public bath houses across Kusatsu, some of which charge no admission fee. Among the more popular public baths are the large rotemburo (outdoor baths) in Sainokawara Park.


A special type of bathing and medical treatment offered at some bath houses, is jikan-yu or "time bathing", where bathers enter extremely hot water of around 48 degrees Celsius for a determined time period of typically three minutes.

Yumomi, the traditional way of cooling down the water to bathing temperature, can be viewed in a performance at Netsunoyu.

Most of Kusatsu's hot spring water surfaces at the yubatake (hot water field) in the town center and in the Sainokawara Park.
