The Tog Shop, Georgia

It all began in the 1940?s when New York designer Gertrude Davenport took a piece of white terry cloth, draped it sarong-like around a woman?s figure, closed it with a top and side button, and christened it ?the Wraparong?. With this simple design she created a fashion direction that was to culminate in millions of sales in different versions and colors for women. It?s success also launched an entire mail order catalog. The Tog Shop issued it?s first catalog in the early 1950?s.
Miss Davenport, a native of Americus, received in the mail at her New York apartment one day in 1947 a patent number for one of her designs, which was one of the earliest granted in the fashion industry. The 1948 design is in the Costume Institute collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art as an important example of the evolution of American Loungewear.
Gertrude Davenport really started a trend when she ?sewed a little something? to wear while going to and from the bath. That garment became responsible for a most successful catalog now mailed across the nation. More info on: www.therealgeorgia.com
