Morne Å• l'Eau:
Agricultural village, former center of sugar industry, 17km from Pointe-Å•-Pitre between the Mangrove at East, the Grands-Fonds South and the plains North. The channel Rotours, digged 1826, linked the village to the sea and nowadays, fishermen still use it to deliver their capture.
Vieux-Bourg:
A charming, typical and quiet fishermen's village, during the good days of sugar industry more important than Morne Å• l'Eau. The last sugar refinery in the surroundings, Blanchet, has been shut down in 1979. Mangroves and grassy beaches. A well sheltered bay with magnificent view over the Grand Cul-de-Sac-Marin with the isle Macou and farer away the isle Fajou.
To visit:
The famous cimetery of Morne Å• l'Eau, on the hillside, with its black and white tiled graves. Very impressing especially at All-Soul's Day, when thousands of candles illuminate the site.
The Day of Crabs, fair each year at Easter
The Mangrove swamps on board of fisher boats or sea canoes
The Grands Fonds, spreading out to Sainte-Anne and Les Abymes. Hills with luxuriant vegetation far away from touristic animation. Inhabited by the descendants of so called Blancs-Matignons, aristocrats settled there during the French Revolution. Breathtaking view around some turns of the winding road.
The surrounding countryside on horseback or with oxcarts.
