Tatun Natural Park, at the foot of Mt. Tatun, was designed to preserve an area with a natural and undisturbed feel where visitor movement is to some extent controlled by a raised wooden path, while at the same time giving access to points of interest. The area is surrounded on four sides by mountains, making it a warm and sheltered valley. There is a pond here with water plants, inhabited by fish and water beetles, as well as various species of frogs. Some foreign species of reptiles and amphibians, such as red-eared terrapins and bull-frogs released by members of the public, also thrive there, although it remains to be seen how far these intruders will upset the ecological balance of the area. In addition to butterflies, dragonflies, crickets, grass-hoppers, and beetles all abound in the area and this in turn attracts small tree-frogs and lizards which feed on these insects. The Natural Park is used as an educational resource by many schools as well as a purely recreational facility. Its entrance is on county route 101 A, almost opposite the Butterfly Corridor entrance.
