Kiribati (pronounced keer-i-bahs) boasts the largest ocean area of any nation in Micronesia and consists of three major island chains, the Gilberts Group, the Phoenix Group and the Line Islands Group. Some of the most famous Kiribati islands include Tarawa, scene of intense fighting between the Japanese and U.S. Marines and soldiers during World War II, and Christmas (Kiritimati) Island, the world's largest atoll in land area. Kiritimati is now drawing scuba divers, birdwatchers and fishermen looking for the Pacific's best saltwater flyfishing.
