Rajin-Sonbong is is a free economic and trade zone known as a golden triangle. It is situated between the Rajin and Josan Bays, northeastern tip of Korea. It shares borders with China and Russia bounded by the Tuman River.

It covers an area of 746 square kilometers. 75 percent is covered with forested peaks. The highest point is the Mt. Songjin (1146m). The coastline is 120 km long. Characterized by an oceanic climate, it has an average temperature of 6.3° C; January 8.8° C below zero and August 20,9° C. The average precipitation ranges 770 mm. Strong wind blows from November to March.

Rajin-Sonbong and the areas adjacent to it have large resources of iron ore, coal, magnesite and materials for celadon. They also boast forest and marine resources. This area has several nature reserves including the Al Island Bird Reserve, Uam Bird Reserve, Uam Seal Reserve and Uam Sweet Cherry Reserve.

As a cradle of human culture in the northeastern region, this area is famous for the relics from the primitive age to the Old Stone Age and Bronze Age. The 21st century is expected to be a boom century in the Rajin-Sonbong Area with steady growth of transit trade, manufacturing, processing, finance and tourism. This will arouse interests of investors, businessmen and tourists.
