South of Shakhrisabz, in the Surkhandarya province, along the anshient trade route of the Great Silk Road, hidden away in a beautiful valley, lays Baisun an area on its way to becoming a household name among the culturally interested in Uzbekistan and Central Asia. Since recently Baisun features on the Unesco List of intangible heritage. It is in the Baisuntau mountains that early man developed during the Palaeolithicum. Finds from cave sites of the area and rock paintings of magic hunting are on display at a number of museums, especially at the newly opened Museum in Termez. An important festival of folk music and avanguard fashion based on traditional costumes is being held in May of 2002 and Baisun may well become the next cultural destination in Uzbekistan. Paleolithic rock paintings and a deeply rooted ancient culture, which is still lived today, make Baisun a unique place along the Great Silk Road. A local legend has it that Alpamish, an old wise man from Baisuntau buried in the mountains a magic onion. Who will unearth it, will be blessed with eternal happiness.
Peculiar to the Kashkadarya region is the village Jaynau Kazan. Its inhabitants are of direct Arabic descent who to this day have preserved their Arabic language and the customs and traditions inherited from their ancestors.
