It is one of the nation's largest urban areas and the commercial center for a coffee-producing agricultural region. Mbale is linked by rail with Kampala (Uganda's capital) and Nairobi (in Kenya) and by highway with Kampala. Population (1991 estimate) 53,634. Internships in Uganda are located in the peaceful Mbale district, near the eastern border of the country. Mbale town is a small city with less than 100,000 people. It is very picturesque and has many restaurants, internet cafes, and tourist opportunities. Most placements are in and around the town of Mbale. A few are located in more rural areas of Mbale district. Of the 1,200,000 people in the district, 90% are considered rural and illiteracy rates are as high as 40%. Most schools are affected with poor staffing, inadequate physical facilities, and underdeveloped curriculum.
