Samburu National Reserve, Tanzania

The Samburu National Reserve is located about 220 miles north of Nairobi in Kenya?s arid, north of Mt. Kenya. The park is relatively small, covering an area of only 104 square km on the northern bank of Uaso Nyiro river with a unique landscapes of rounded and rugged hills and undulating plains.

Small herds of elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, cheetah and plains game are present but a special feature of this Reserve are the various species of game unique to these northern parks - Beisa oryx, the long necked gerenuk, Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe and the blue shanked Somali ostrich. Leopard are often seen.

The area is home to the Samburu tribe, pastoral relatives of the Masai. The landscape is rugged and dramatic, the climate Hot and Dry and vegetation is mainly wooded and bushy grassland, riverine forest and swamps. . The Ewaso Nyiro river, which is the life provider in this area runs along the southern boundary dividing Samburu from Buffalo Springs Reserve. Crocodile and hippo are seen in the river.
