Situated hardly 3 km from the city is the Island Goree. This was the first French settlement in the continent. Later on, this became notorious as the market for slaves. The island has several old colonial buildings , the House of Slaves { Maison des esclaves ) museum and a small beach. It is also the terminal for the Paris-Dakar motor rally.

The island is declared by UNESCO as world heritage. More info on: www.ecowas.info
