Vinhlong, Vietnam

Vinh Long is at the heart of the Mekong Delta, and one of its most scenic provinces. Vinh Long itself is a medium-sized town on the banks of the Mekong River, about halfway between My Tho and Can Tho, and is the capital of Vinh Long Province.
Cruising the river and exploring the smaller canals with their fruit gardens and floating markets is a marvelous experience. Vinh Long is also a good base for visiting the nearby Khmer villages with their ancient pagodas and remnants of a bygone era.
The dozens of beautiful small islands in the river are what makes a trip to Vinh Long really worthwhile. The islands are quite literally groaning under the weight of tropical fruit orchards. Binh Hoa Phuoc and An Binh island are two of the better known ones, but there are many others. This area of the Mekong Delta is as much land as water, and houses are generally built on stilts. Bring plenty of film with you because photo opportunities abound at every turn.
