Tuyen Quang is characterized by its mountains, with majestic peaks over 2,000m ( feet) high. The capital, Tuyen Quang Town, is 165km (102 miles) north of Hanoi. While over half of the province's population are Kinh people, the colorful festivals of the Tay, Dao and Nung ethnic groups can also be found. Tuyen Quang is also known for the ancient citadel from the Mac Dynasty, built in 1552 on the banks of the Lo river. The Northern and western gates and parts of the high brick walls of the citadel can still be seen.

Tuyen Quang is most famous among Vietnamese people for being a home base to troops opposing the French and Japanese prior to the 1945 revolution. The small valley of Tan Trao in Son Duong District was the provisional capital of the so called liberated area where the Dong Duong Communist Party (precursor to the Communist Party of Vietnam) held its National Conference in August 1945 and decided to rise up against the French, leading to the Declaration of Independence on September 2, 1945.
