Phong Nha Cave system is located in the limestone hills of Quang Binh province in central Vietnam, 50km (31 miles) northwest of Dong Hoi. The system is home to the Chai River, the world's longest underground river.

While parts of the cave system have seen human use since the days of the Cham empire, the first sections were only surveyed in 1998 in preparation for World Heritage listing.

The 14 publicly accessible chambers are linked by an underground river, with secondary corridors branching off in all directions. The ceiling of the outer cave and some of the inner caves tower up to 40m (130 feet) above the surface of the river. There may be other corridors leading to other large chambers, but rockfalls and constant erosion make parts of the system too dangerous for exploration.

Stalactites and stalagmites are common to limestone caves the world over. Phong Nha is no exception. The stalactites and stalagmites, enriched with minerals leached from the soil, perform a magical lightshow of color when lit up with a beam of light.
