Phanthiet-Muine, Vietnam

Phan Thiet is built along both banks of the Phan Thiet River, also known as the Ca Ti and Muong Man. The river flows through the center of town and creates a small, natural fishing harbor which is always chock-a-block with boats. It makes for charming photography.

Mui Ne Beach is a peaceful alternative to the beaches closer to town. This beautiful beach is near a fishing village at the tip of Mui Ne Peninsula, 22km (13 miles) east of Phan Thiet on route 706 and 200km (125 miles) from Ho Chi Minh City. Mui Ne also attracts tourists and locals alike for its enormous sand dunes. Constantly changing with the winds and rains, the dunes are never the same. Ever! You can stroll the dunes and admire the wind's intricate patterns in the sand or revel in the shrieks of delight and laughter as youngsters (and the young at heart) slip and slide their way down 30m (100 foot) high sand dunes. (usually ending up in a spray of sand and a giggling mass of bodies, arms and legs!).

Another point of interest is the Fairy spring. It is actually a stream that flows through some interesting sand and rock formations. It's an unusual experience to track this stream from the sea to its source. Wear sturdy footwear though. Sand can be unexpectedly hot - flimsy footwear may even melt in the hottest part of the day!

There is a small Cham Tower called Thap Poshaknu about 5km (3 miles) out of Phan Thiet on the way to Mui Ne. There is also a long stretch of palm-fringed beach. Sheltered in the bay, the beach and water aren't as clean and crystal as Mui Ne, but it is deserted except for the odd fisherman setting out or returning home with the days catch.
