My Tho is the peaceful capital city of Tien Giang Province. Being the closest Mekong Delta town to Ho Chi Minh city, it is popular with tourists for a day trip to catch a glimpse of the mighty Mekong as she nears the end of her journey from the heights of the Himalayas.
Boat trips are the highlight of a visit to My Tho, or indeed any other Mekong Delta destination. The small wooden vessels do make their way out onto the Mekong proper, but the most interesting trips are cruising the mazes of small canals and backwaters past rural villages where the real Mekong Delta lives. Destinations can include a coconut-candy workshop, an apiary, orchid garden.
My Tho is also home to Vinh Trang Pagoda, built at the end of the 17th century. The snake farm at Dong Tam and the fruit orchards are also attractions.
