Luang Prabang is the ancient capital of the Lan Xang kingdom, and even after the capital was moved to Vientiane, Luang Prabang continued to retain its status as a seat of power. ItÂ’s a charming place, with old wooden structures, and pagodas that sit high on a hill above the Mekong river.

In 1995 UNESCO declared the entire town a World Heritage site. This move has paved the way for assistance in preservation that is helping to restore the town to its former glory. Luang Prabang already considered a ‘living museum’ because of the well preserved architecture and religious buildings.
