Laocai, Vietnam

Lao Cai is right on the Chinese border and just north of Sapa. Separated from the Chinese town of Hekou by the upper reaches of the Red river, it is an important border crossing into Yunnan Province and Kunming. Lao Cai is at the very northern end of the rail system in Vietnam. The town was virtually destroyed by the Chinese in the invasion of 1979, so most buildings are new. Lao Cai is a major concentration point for travellers journeying into China from Vietnam, and a good base for trekking around Sapa and Mount Fansipan, Vietnam's highest peak (3143m - 10,312 feet).
