Lai Chau province is located in northwest Vietnam and shares borders with China, Laos, and Lao Cai and Son La. Its central, Lai Chau Town, nestled in a beautiful valley carved from a spectacular mountains by the Da river. Far from busy trade routes, normal commerce is limited and the town has only been really successful in harvesting particularly valuable cash crops. The population consists mainly of the Thai, Si La, and La Chi minority groups. The tropical monsoon climate brings a rainy summer and a short winter. The annual average temperature is 23 and the average rainfall is 2,500mm. The road from Lai Chau to Sapa and Lao Cai is perhaps the most beautiful drive in Vietnam.
