Kon Tum is considered the garden spot of the Central Highlands. Compared to the more tourist oriented Da Lat, Kon Tum is largely unspoiled. Kon Tum is inhabited by ethnic groups including the Bahnar, Jarai, Rengao and Sedang communities. Kon Tum is a must for visit ethnic villages their traditional lifestyles.

BAHNAR VILLAGE

Visitors to a Bahnar village will see beautiful wooden stilt houses of all shapes and sizes. The staircase leading to a house is made of a tree trunk. Each of the steps is meticulously chiseled, reflecting the carving skills of Bahnar men.The Ba Na people were the first ethnic group in the Central Highlands to have a written language and use buffaloes and cows to plough their fields.

The Bahnar are famous for their hunting skill. Visitors to any house will see the wooden bows and quivers of arrows hanging on the walls. Like many other ethnic peoples in the Central Highlands, the Bahnar always keep a fire burning in their houses. The fire is a central element in Bahnar life, where family members and friends sit to eat, drink and talk. Of course the fire also keeps them warm on those cool mountain nights.

Most Ba Na men have scars on their chest. These are self-inflicted wounds. The man plunges the burning end of a timber into his chest or cuts himself with a sharp knife when a family member dies. This is to demonstrate his pain over the loss of a loved one.
