Situated on the small Cam Ly River at the height of 1,200m (3,937 feet), Da Lat was founded in 1917. Da Lat has a cool climate making it a very popular retreat from the heat of HCMC and the Mekong Delta. Coupled with its natural beauty, its French villas and bungalows, renovated hotels and recently built golf course, it is popular with locals and foreign tourists alike.

Da Lat's mild temperatures make it ideal for growing all kinds of fruit and vegetables, which cannot be grown on the much hotter coastal plains, for sale in HCMC. Apart from being HCMC's market garden, Da Lat is also famous for growing flowers, especially its roses.

Sight-seeing spots:

XUAN HUONG LAKE

Xuan Huong Lake is in the center of Da Lat and was created by a dam in 1919. It is named after a 17th century Vietnamese poet well known for scathing attacks on the double standards and shortcomings of religious leaders and governing officials.

BAO DAI'S SUMMER PALACE

Emperor Bao Dai's Summer Palace provides the visitor with a very interesting look into the personal and official paraphernalia used by Vietnam's last emporer before his departure for exile in France.

VALLEY OF LOVE

Named the valley of Peace by Emperor Bao Dai, students from Da Lat University nicknamed it the Valley of Love and the name stuck. This is a good place to see the "Da Lat cowboys". The "cowboys" are in fact Vietnamese guides dressed as American cowboys come back another year and they have the Montagnards dressed as Indians.

PRENN WATERFALL

Prenn Falls is one of the largest and loveliest falls in the Da Lat area, with an elevation of 1,124m (3,687 feet). Prenn Falls has a path under a rock ledge from where you can view the pool below and the surrounding scenery through the veil of cascading water, making for interesting photography. The sheer volume of water sometimes closes the path after a rainstorm.

CAM LY WATERFALL

Cam Ly Waterfall is a tourist-magnet for domestic visitors and the habitat of horses and more Da Lat cowboys. Many of the cowboys you see around here aren't guides but tourists - for a fee you can get dressed as a cowboy and have your photo taken.

LINH SON PAGODA

Established in 1938, Linh Son Pagoda features a massive bell made of bronze and gold. Despite its obvious value, the sheer weight of the bell is said to make it too heavy to be stolen - and who would steal from a pagoda anyway! The pagoda is about 1km from the center of Da Lat. There are coffee and tea plants behind the pagoda.

LANG BIAN MOUNTAIN

The 3-4 hour hike up Lang Bian Mountain, or Lam Vien in Vietnamese, is well worth it for the absolutely spectacular views. The mountain actually has five peaks, from 2,100 to 2,400m (6,890 to 7,875 feet) high. You do not need a permit to visit Lang Bian Mountain, though taking a guide along will make the trip more interesting.
