Cat Ba is approximately 30km (10 miles) from Haiphong City. It comprises the main island of Cat Ba and nearly 300 islets in an area of 300km2 (115 miles2). Artifacts have been found suggesting that the island has been populated for over 6,000 years. Until 1893, it was a haven for pirates attacking ships from the Red River delta to the Chinese border. People can find many deserted white sand beaches like Cat Co and Cat Vang.

Cat Ba is best known as the home of Cat Ba National Park. Cat Ba is Vietnam's most famous national park, and home to an extremely rich variety of flora and fauna, on land and in the surrounding waters. The island itself ranges from 300m (985 foot) limestone hill to mangrove swamps at the water's edge. Seals and dolphins are the largest of over 200 marine animals sighted around Cat Ba, and monkeys, wild boar, wild cats and deer roam the island.
