Ca Mau is the most southerly town in Vietnam, and occupies the wide swathe of fertile plains left behind by the Mekong river. ItÂ’s a vastly fertile place with fruit orchards, rice fields and other agricultural crops.
The U Minh Forest is nearby, and itÂ’s the largest mangrove and cajeput tree ecosystem after the Amazon Basin. Masses of defoliants were dropped during the war and destroyed huge parts of the forest; and large forest fires devastated the fragile balance. Its now been replanted and the diversity of the plants and trees has been restored.
The town of Ca Mau offers simple and basic food and accommodation options, but they are clean and friendly. As a southern outpost of Vietnam, itÂ’s a far off place that attracts few visitors and it makes for an interesting journey.
