Bac Ninh province is located 16 km (about 10 miles) north of Hanoi and is the heartland of the ancient Kinh Bac region. The hospitable people of Bac Ninh are imbued with cultural traditions and creativity. The province is famous for its craft villages, producing paintings, silk and silken items, traditional handicrafts and paper. Bac Ninh is also famous for the Lim Festival and Dau Pagoda.
Dau Pagoda is one of the most important religious, historic and artistic Buddhist sites in Vietnam. It was officially recognized as a national cultural heritage site in 1962. Among the oldest pagodas in Vietnam, Dau Pagoda is said to have been established in the 2nd century. It became well known throughout Vietnam and abroad as a center for Buddhist learning and scholarship. While the current architecture generally dates from the 19th century, many architectural and sculptural components from earlier periods still remain. The restored Buddhist statues and religious objects date from the 16th and 17th centuries.
The Lim festival takes place in Noi Duc Commune of Tien Son District on the 13th day of the first lunar month (usually mid-February to early March). It is centered on the Kinh Bac tradition Quan Ho singing. The Lim Festival commemorates Hieu Trung Hau, credited with creating this art-form. Quan Ho folk songs are performed by separate male and female groups who converse through elaborate questions and answers. While the answers are improvised, there are strict rules. Singers must not only be quick-witted, but also must have a strong grasp of the traditional tunes and a deep understanding of the history and culture which gave rise to it. The festival also involves processions, singing performances and many games such as human chess, wrestling and more.
