Bacha, Vietnam

Displayed: times.
Bac Ha is fast emerging as an alternative to Sapa about 80 km (50 miles) away. Tourism is new to Bac Ha and has barely touched the lives of the people. In fact, if you arrive mid-week, the town has a nice 'empty' feel to it.
The highlands around Bac Ha are about 900m (2,950 feet) above sea level, making it somewhat warmer than Sapa. The district is home to Hmong, Dao, Giay (Nhang), Han, Xa Fang, La Chi, Nung, Phu La, Thai and Thu Lao ethnic groups who previously engaged in opium production. With the help of the government, they now grow plums and rice, and brew rice wine, cassava wine and corn liquor for sale.
