The library stores information about the black society of the Carribean, and people of African and Asian descent. George Padmore (1902-1959), was a dedicated Pan Africanist and anti-colonialist. He was very influential in the 20th century independence struggles. The library was set up to honor him and to recognize his good works.
The collection at the library includes archives on cultural, educational and political campaign groups, journals, newspapers, books, and pamphlets. Also in the archives are literature published by social movements and anti-racist organizations between the 1960 and 1990. Major collections relate to the Caribbean Artists, the Black Education and Supplementary Schools, and the Black Parents Movements, the New Cross Massacre Campaign, the International Book Fair of Radical Black and Third World Books and the accompanying Book Fair Festivals, 1982-1995.
The Du Bois Centre for Pan-African Culture
The Centre houses a research library, manuscripts, and the grave of Du Bois a famous African-American scholar and the ashes of his wife. The Du Bois Centre, is a source of inspiration to many.
The black and white rectangular building has a compounded decorated with trees, flowers, pathways, and aquarium. Inside, the hall is decorated with the portraits of some celebrities of Ghana and Africa. There is also the display gallery for manuscripts, other Du Bois Memorabilia, and research library of his treasured books and other great writers. A special plaque mounted on a concrete contrivance welcomes the visitor with two inscriptions from the Du Bois poem ?Children of the Moon.
