The Volta Lake resulted from the construction of the Akosombo dam in 1960. It is the largest man-made lake in the world, and covers an area of about 8,515 hectares. The massive expanse of water, enclosed within superb green hills as well as electricity has generated a lots of tourist interest. There is a port a Yeji which serves as both the landing grounds for local fisherman and the termination point for the boat from Akosombo.
The Volta Basin covers about 45 percent of Ghana?s total land surface. Its northern edge has a height of between 150 to 215 metres above sea level. To the north and west of the basin are the Gambaga and Konkori Scarps respectively which have an elevation of between 300 and 460 meters. The basin is less than 300 metres in the south and the south-west. The Lake Volta, the Akosombo Dam, and the Volta basin offer great opportunities for tourist. The lake offers cruising opportunities for tourist especially at the Dodi Islands
