The castle served as the nerve centre of the infamous slave trade. The castle houses the dungeons and the 'room of no return'. It is a place to experience what really transpired when able-bodied men were transported away from their own land to a foreign land never to return.

The proximity of Cape Coast to Elmina Castle and its sheltered beach made it a strategic location to most European nations, and became the source of attraction, competition and conflict among the Portuguese, Dutch, Danes, Swedes and English. In 1555 the Portuguese built the first trade lodge in the the area. In 1653 under the leadership of Krusenstjerna, the Swedes constructed a permanent fort and called it Carolusburg after King Charles X of Sweden. Within the first 11 years of the existence of Carolusburg, it changed hands between the Danes, the Fetu tribe of Ghana, and the Dutch usually on the battlefield. The English led by Captain Holmes captured Carolusburg, and mantained control of it until the late 19th century. It served as the West African headquarters of the Committee of Merchants and later as the seat of the British governor.
