Buabeng-Fiema Monkey Sanctuary, Ghana

This sanctuary was established in 1974 to give legal backing to the customs and traditions of the people of Buaben-Fiema. It enabled the community to protect resident black and white Colobus and Mona monkeys which are important to their cultural belief. The total area covered by the sanctuary is 4.4 km square.

The monkeys live together with humans; large groups are easily found in the forest and within the village. It has a rich butterfly population of different species. It serves as the habitat for many Colobus and Mona monkeys, which are held sacred by the local people. Visitors taking the forest walks, along shaded trails, are rewarded with sightings of many birds, butterflies, and indigenous flowers.

The sanctuary is the only place where two different species of monkeys, regarded as sacred - the Campbell's Mona and the Geoffroy's Columbus - live together within the same habitat in peace and in harmony with human beings. According to wildlife experts monkeys around the world do not lives in this manner. There are about 500 Mona monkeys in the Sanctuary. They are brownish and omnivorous. The black and white Geoffroy's Columbus monkeys number about 200; they are vegetarians. A visitor to the Sanctuary in the early morning would certainly hear monkeys calling loudly to one another.
