Cabarete, Dominican Republic

Displayed: times.
Cabarete was once just another small village on the north coast of the Dominican Republic, the first settlement of any note east of Sosua and a favorite vacation spot for city-dwelling Dominicans. Then, during the 1980s, things started to change. A small band of Canadian and European surfers were the first to discover the near-perfect windsurfing conditions in Cabarete Bay, and, through word-of-mouth rather than any great publicity campaign, Cabarete gained a reputation for being one of the finest windsurfing locations in the world. The town has subsequently hosted numerous international windsurfing competitions - including the PWA World Cup - and has also started to attract international attention for its surfing and kitesurfing conditions.
