Cartagena is hot, vibrant and beautiful. The old town lies within fortified walls; splendid colonial buildings line the narrow winding streets, gaping doorways afford glimpses of picturesque interior courtyards, and balconies bulge with flowers and laundry overhead.
Cartagena was founded in 1553 as a defensive port and storage point for goods brought across from Europe and riches from the Americas bound for Spain. Despite numerous attacks on the town, its formidable walls and fortresses remain largely intact, and are an interesting visit, as are the splendid colonial churches and plazas.
Outside the tranquillity of the old city walls, Cartagena is a large, bustling and friendly port town; drinking fresh fruit juice and watching the world go by on the Muelle de los Pegasos is not to be missed. Away from the harbour is a strip of Caribbean coast, where the resort of Bocagrande lies. Crowded with hotels and apartment blocks, the area attracts visitors and locals alike. Other beaches extend along the coast, some more peaceful than others, but all providing an escape from the incessant tropical heat.
