Cartagena is perhaps the most beguiling and atmospheric colonial city in South America. It has a perfectly restored walled and cobbled centre, where flower-filled balconies decorate ornate facades, and a series of forts from a time when pirates ruled the waves. Of the many places to stay in Cartagena, the hotel Santa Clara is one of the more luxurious.
The country's capital, Bogotá, is a teeming and vibrant city. It is home to the Gold Museum - one of the most interesting and well-presented museums in Latin America. The grand buildings in its colonial heart are also most impressive.
Hopefully it will not be long before more peaceful times return to Colombia, enabling visitors to explore other highlights: the delightful University city of Popayán; the intriguing archaeological sites at San Agustin and Tierradentro; the jungle areas around Leticia; and hiking in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.
