Geghard, Armenia, Armenia

The monastery of Geghard was named after its most famous religious artifact, the lance that was said to have pierced the side of Christ. Although the lance has been moved, there are still reasons enough to still visit Geghard. The buildings of this fascinating monastery were carved from solid granite. A total of four churches were hewed out of the hillsides and valley. The oldest dates from the 1200s (donÂ’t miss the two carved lions over the doorway). Animal sacrifices take place outside the church on Sundays.
The site also has a great location, with a small waterfall nearby and great views over the surrounding countryside.
It is possible to see Geghard in conjunction with Garni on a day trip from Yerevan.
Notice however, that the bus doesn't make it all the way to Geghard, so you either take a taxi, or hitch the rest of the way.
