Bishkek is located at the foothills of the Terskej Alatoo, and there are lots of picturesque and recreational areas in its suburbs. One of the recreational areas is Ala-Archa gorge, which in Kyrgyz means bright juniper. Justifying the name, juniper is growing all over the place, and is food for birds in the surrounding area. The Alamedin River, flowing along the gorge is beautiful. Ice cold, it can be wild and dangerous at the beginning of spring and in early summer. The region has many climbing routes of high complexity, and peaks with altitudes from 4,000 m to 5,000 m above the sea level. Ala-Archa gorge is a favourite place where tourists, climbers, and citizens of Bishkek used to rest and train for climbing.
