Karakol, Kyrgyzstan

Nick Cox
Displayed: times. The town of Karakol, at the east end of Lake Issyk-Kul, appears on most maps as Przhevalsk, which it was called in honour of Nikolai Przhevalski, the nineteenth-century explorer. Przhevalsky actually spent more time "discovering" Ussuriland, Mongolia, and Xinjiang than he did roaming Kyrgyzstan. But he had the misfortune of succumbing to his last illness here at Issyk-Kul, where he is buried.
