ONE of Sarawak's many famous mountains, Gunung Serembu, which overlooks the vast and verdant Kuching hinterland, is calling for attention.
Made famous by Sir James Brooke when he built his bungalow named “Peninjau” – which means lookout point – near the top of the 490m mountain in the 1840s, the site became a popular resort for Brooke and his numerous European friends, including naturalist explorers Alfred Russel Wallace, Spenser St John and Odoardo Beccari.

Taking on the challenge, descendants of the Bidayuh inhabitants who served the White Rajah, namely the inhabitants of three old longhouses – Peninjau, Bumbok and Serembu – decided to initiate the move to preserve the area as a cultural heritage.
