Every weekend, Tallinners flock to this beautiful area of pine forests, small villages, sand-dune beaches and rivers full of trout and salmon. The park's terraced limestone geology and glacier-sculpted landscape offer 14 lakes and many small waterfalls. Wildlife includes lynx, brown bears, mink, black storks, cranes and mute swans. You can visit ancient settlements at Kahala, Palmse and Vihula, as well as several moisad (manor houses). The most popular moisad among tourists is in Palmse: It was the home of German barons in the 18th century. 25 mi/40 km east of Tallinn.
