Make sure you visit Graz cathedral - a rococo masterpiece in which the pulpit is gilded and panelled with portraits in the style and colours of 18th-century porcelain, cherubs blow trumpets and Christ sits on a throne of gold that throws out a shower of gilded beams. There is also a fresco from an earlier and less august age; it depicts scenes from 1485, an annus horribilis in the history of the city during which it suffered an epidemic of the Black Death and was then set upon by Turks determined on enslavement.
