Esterházy Palace is a landmark and one of the most significant historic monuments in the Austrian province of Burgenland.
Under the influence of the Esterházy family, the palace in the provincial capital of Eisenstadt very soon became the fulcrum of court life in the former kingdom of Hungary. It gave Joseph Haydn an exceptional setting in which to work, and even today its atmosphere makes this one of Austria's most remarkable palaces.
With its varied programme of entertainment and cultural events and unique situation at the meeting point of East and West, Esterházy Palace will continue to play an important role in the 21st century as a fascinating historical site, a focus of modern culture, and a place of international encounter
In the possession of the Esterházy family since 1649, this palace in the town of Eisenstadt is inseparably linked with the turbulent history of the Pannonian region.
The original Gothic building was greatly extended and transformed into a stately home for the Esterházy family. As a result, the palace now features an unusual mixture of baroque grandeur, neo-classical austerity and elements of the Austrian Biedermeier era. The rooms of Esterházy Palace have borne witness to the tides of time, and are now a focal point in the social life of today.
The pride of the palace is the Haydn Room, one of the world's most beautiful con-cert halls, with exceptionally good acoustics, too. The Haydn Room is the main venue of the annual Joseph Haydn Festival, providing an impressive setting for symphonies, oratorios and opera performances. Over and above these, each week a number of concerts and matinees devoted to the life and work of Joseph Haydn offer an incomparable musical experience in this historic site.
The cultural programme at Esterházy Palace is rounded out by a wide range of different events, including theme tours and readings, exhibitions and symposia, and a variety of cultural happenings.
The province of Burgenland ensures that the rich tradition of this cultural heritage can be maintained and enhanced for future generations.
