Territory Week has been celebrated since 1958 and commemorates Christmas Island becoming an Australian Territory.

The Island community comprised residents of Chinese 75%, Malay 15% and Europeans 10% decent which creates a rich cultural background. The festival allows all cultural groups to represent and display their heritage. This allows artistic expression to be disseminated to all groups.

Territory Week Community Festival is one of the few festivals on Island that involves all members of our community regardless of age, gender, or cultural background. There is wide support for the festival from the whole community.

The festival runs over 12 days and consists of the following

* Territory Week Auction - Business and the community donate goods, service and novelty prize to raise money for community projects

* Fashion show, show cases cultural costumes of the island, wearable art designed on the island, recyclable fashion and items from clothing stores on the island.

* Arts and Culture Exhibition and the Territory Week official opening ceremony.- Exhibition of local artists, children's art and cultural art are on view to the public during the week. The opening ceremony is made up of cultural displays by Kampong, Lion Dance, Silat, Marshal arts display, school choir, Chinese & Malay Dances, Dragon Dance.

* Sport competitions during the week are run in conjunction with Territory week. . Badminton, Golf, Soccer, Basketball

* Market Night - A chance for local arts and crafts to be displayed. Along with international food stalls featuring many of the Islands traditional tastes, there are Busker providing entertainment during the night. A side show carnival is also part of the fun and we as a fancy dress theme, this year is Ghosts & Goblins

* Casino to Cove ride, any wheeled vehicle is the go from a bike, to a hospital bed to a wheelbarrow with the emphases on a fun day out there are spot prizes and prizes for the best decorated vehicle.

* Sports Day caters to all ages with sporting and novelty events. Many of the events encouraging parent and child teams like the egg throwing compeitition, the wheelbarrow race and the piggy back race, and for the sideliners there is the dunking machines and the greasey pole competition.

* Car Rally - a mystery tour of the island with spot prizes and the prizes for the best dressed team and vehicle.

* Cove Day - Territory Day is a public holiday and activities centre around the stage at Flying Fish Cove Dances and displays, Arts stalls, food, fishing competition, swimming races, raft race, treasure hunts, and presentation of the weeks trophies and much, much more….
