Choluteca, Honduras
Pawel Jaworski
Displayed: times.A commercial center for agriculture located in the far southern part of the country, Choluteca (pop. 64,500) isn't a tourism hot spot, though it's close to two good volcanic-sand beaches on the Gulf of Fonseca - Cedeno and Punta Raton. Fishing is also possible on the gulf. This place very much represents the "real" Honduras. In terms of climate, it is often known as being one of the hottest places on the Central American isthmus. Here, at all hours of the day, you are almost certain to see groups of schoolchildren running to and fro, a drunk or two crashed out in a gutter, skinny street dogs begging for food, and nice, friendly people happy to stop and chat with you as they go about their daily business. Although this city lacks tourist amenities, it offers plenty in the way of authenticity. 60 mi/95 km south of Tegucigalpa.
