A pleasant walk into the Arrow Valley.
The route will take you along the side of the River Arrow over typical Warwickshire countryside. The longer walk takes you along the perimeter of Ragley Park but it contains a permissive path that is not open to the public between 1 November and 31 March to prevent disturbance to game birds. The distance for the short walk is four miles, which takes two hours and for the longer walk it is six miles, which is three hours. Car parking facilities are available at the main town car park. There are many good eating places in Alcester. The map to buy is Explorer Map 205, Stratford-upon-Avon.
There are many historic landmarks to admire during the journey:
Arrow Church
A 12th century doorway and the 14th century tomb of Gerard de Canvill mark the age of this church. In 1854 extensive alterations were made when it was regarded as the family church to the owners of nearby Ragley Hall (see their velvet cushions and pegs for top hats in the front row of the pews).
Arrow Village Hall
Beside the track signposted Arrow Saw Mill and almost hidden behind trees is this small single-storey wooden hall which has been serving the social needs of Arrow's tiny community for more than 50 years.
Arrow Mill
A mill has been here since the Domesday survey of 1086. The present buildings are a hotel with its own helicopter pad. A wagon-worn stone bridge leads over an enchanting mill pond, and next to the restaurant inside is an enormous water wheel.
Ragley Hall
Set high on a wooded hillside, this is the stately home of the Marquess of Hertford. Built in 1680 with a park landscaped by Capability Brown, the hall has been the setting of several period-costume films.
