Enjoy a lovely walk into the attractive Warwickshire countryside on Alcester Heath and take the opportunity to visit historic Coughton Court (NT). The return route takes you along the banks of the meandering River Arrow.
The distance of the walk is 7.25 miles; therefore you need to allow yourself three hours and thirty minutes. The main car park in Alcester can be used as car parking facilities. Refreshments are available at the Throckmorton Arms, Coughton. The map to buy is Explorer Map 205, Stratford-upon-Avon. Historic sites to see on the way are:

Cold Comfort Wood
Thousands of years ago, the whole neighbourhood was covered by dense forest. Ancient man carved out fields, leaving pockets of woodland like this one. Occasional boulders have been found, brought for mysterious purposes from far afield in ancient times.

Coughton Court
Fervently Catholic, the Throckmorton family of the 1500s and 1600s were in the thick of religious and political intrigue. They sided with Mary Queen of Scots (executed in 1588), and, on 5 November 1605, two of their nephews were ring-leaders in the Gunpowder Plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament.

The Old Town Hall (Alcester)
At the top of Henley Street, this stately building started life in 1618 as an open-arched market hall where farmers could sell corn under cover. By 1641 the upper storey was added, and by 1919 it had become the Town Hall, now used for social occasions.
