Brno`s castle Špilberk was founded in the second half of the 13th century by the Czech king Premysl Otakar II. The castle went from royal property into the possession of aristocracy or of the city of Brno.
In the 17th and 18th centuries it was rebuilt in the prison complex, which was labelled “the prison of nations”. It can generally be said that Špilberk prison was for the heaviest cases, political as well as homicidal. During the first world war enemies as well as the politically unreliable were locked up regardless of their nationality. It was even worse during the second world war, when it was run by the gestapo.
When you visit Špilberk today, you can view the underground exposition of prison which has the look as it did at the cusp of the 18th and 19th centuries. Going through these underground spaces, where so much human suffering was concentrated, is a strong experience. One look into the torture chamber and one starts to find joy in the things which he had not noticed until this point.
