With no doubt the chateau is the dominating sight of the city Kromeriz. Its foundations were laid in the time of promotion of the estate to the town by the bishop Bruno of Schaumburg. He had built a castle with fortification in the place of contemporary chateau.
There was left only the square tower from the former castle. In the 14th and 15th century the castle went through several changes and reconstructions and just the period of Renaissance left the deepest print on it. Another period which strongly influenced the view of the chateau was Baroque in the turn of 17th and 18th century.
The greatest credit of these changes has Karel Lichtenstein who invited the Italian architect and builder G.P.Tencalla to the reconstruction of the chateau. But the big fire in 1752 destroyed most of the interiors. The renewal was undertaken by a couple of Austrian painters of late Baroque. These artists left there numerous frescos, plasters and mosaic. The representative halls show the perfect synthesis of the art and craft skills.
Bishop Karel Lichtenstein also bought most of the immensely valuable pictures that can be seen in the chateau on the amazing chateau gallery. Visitors can find in this precious collection of European masters such outstanding works as Tizian’s “Appolo and Marsyas” or van Dyck’s portrait of Charles I. English and his wife.
