Displayed: times.Reunion's cuisine is just as mixed and varied as its population. Of the dishes originally brought in by the first inhabitants, non has retained its original flavour; all of them have benefited from the family cook's inspiration and generosity. The famous and ubiquitous local dish called "cari" is unique in the Indian Ocean. It is ptrepared with meat, poultry, fish or seafood and contains garlic, onion, plenty of tomatoes, turmeric, clove and ginger : those are reminder of the good old days when Bourbon (Reunion's former name) was an island of spices. Traditional Indian cuisine is well worth a try too, for instance the hot, flavoured "massalés". The right way to eat a genuine Indian curry dish is directly from banana leaves : exoticism is guarantueed ! Indo-Muslim cuisine is altogether different and provides a range of exotic flavours : cinnamon, clove, nutmeg. Last but not least, the Chinese, who arrived in the island towards the en of the 19th century, brought their cooking pans and culinary know-how. Most of them were from Canton, a region renowned fro its cooking. Of course, it is possible to have a sirloin steack and chips or a fish Provençal nearly everywhere, but what's the fun of it ?
