Population - A metisse culture, Reunion

From this history full with movements and meetings, was born a great cultural richness. To include itself/understand, the inhabitants of the colony forged a vernacular language: the Creole, inherited old French, spiced words of Malagasy origin or tamoule, coloured with wishes. But the great majority of the population is described in French, who is the official language.
Attached to France, Réunionnais endeavour at the same time not to forget their roots. The religious practices are very present in the everyday life of a majority of inhabitants.
Moslems put aside, about all are catholic, sometimes enthusiastic. But the worships of the origins never were completely forgotten. Certain descendants of slaves still make the "Malagasy service", rite of homage paid to the ancestors. The hindouism exposes its thousand colors on the frontages of the temples which flower in all the island. In October-November, Dipavali, "celebrates light", joins together thousands of faithful, the processions and spectacular "the steps on fire" are organized at the rate/rhythm of an ancestral calendar. In the downtown area, the song of the muezzin often answers the bells of the churches, the incense burns under the impassive eye of the Buddha...
Each one cultivates, in its kitchen, in its beliefs, the memory of the origins. It moving, is evoked by the drums and the songs of the maloya, this ternary "blues" transmitted in single heritage by the slaves. The music of the séga evokes, it, more the meeting of the European and African worlds in the small island of the Indian Ocean.
With the Meeting, the cultural expression is with the:métissée and plural image of its inhabitants, a little from here, a little besides.
