Tyrolean houses

Apart form the palace and the church, the greatest tourist attraction of Mysłakowice are its Tyrolean houses. They are a unique and original type of wooden architecture.

The construction of such houses in the then village of Erdmannsdorf-Zillerthal began with the so-called ‘test house’ (House 1) that was similar to a Tyrolean house. It then belonged to the Oblasser family. After it burned down, a new ‘Tyrolean Inn’ was constructed (now Restauracja pod kasztanami). Although different in sizes, new Tyrolean houses were similar in their form. A typical Tyrolean farmhouse consisted of a two- or three- storey rectangular building (called ‘Streckof’), with a shingle-covered roof. The building housed a residential part, a stable and a barn. Some houses had a platform around the upper floor of the barn. The residential part, often based on a stone or brick plinth, was partially made from wooden beams and surrounded by a porch. The steep ridge roof was covered with shingle or slate. The most characteristic feature of the Tyrolean houses, though, is the wooden balcony with richly decorated support beams. The balusters are richly profiled and decorations of balconies are dominated by floral motifs, e.g. open calyxes of the tulip or the lily. Simpler balusters are decorated with geometrical ornaments, e.g. hearts, squares, stars or three-leaf shapes. The bottom of the balusters are usually shapes resembling the swallow’s tail. Especially worth seeing is the house that once belonged to Johannes Lublasser, a local carpenter, where the balcony still bears the German words: God Bless King William III. Tyrolean houses were usually humbly furnished and the heart of the residential part was a brick or stone oven.

In 1838-1840, 56 Tyrolean houses were built in Mysłakowice and Hohenzillerthal (now Radzicz-Sosnówka). The name Zillerthal that the Tyroleans gave to their settlement in Mysłakowice was the name of their original home valley in Austria, which they had to leave.
