The Danube Delta, Romania

Piotr Jaworski
Displayed: times. The Danube Delta is probably the most secluded and least populated region of modern Romania. The three main towns here are Tulcea, Sulina and Sfintu Gheorghe. Recently, ecotourism fostered the development of other small settlements, such as Crisan. Tulcea lies at the point where the Danube splits into the three channels that flow into the Sea, creating the Delta. The life of the city revloves around the river: there are more boats than cars and there's no meal without fish. ven the local Art Museum reflects the atmosphere. Unusual paintings by Aman and Pallady, inspired from the Turkish heritage of the Sea coast, are the local pride. here are not a lot of accomodations in town, only three hotels, but the local floating hotel - ``ponton" offers an adventurous alternative. Anyway, you're most likely to use the city only as an access point. To explore the wonderful world of the Delta that starts here, you'll have to embark on the ferryboat. n the other side of the Delta, on the Black Sea shore, lies Sulina, a rather small town that bears the signs of time passing. There is not much to do here, but the 200-year old lighthouse and the local cemetery are worth the trip. The graveyard is a vivid history book that tells the story of all the nationalities that came to Sulina to capitalize on its strategic position as a port both to the Sea and the Danube. he Sfintu Gheorghe village is the preferred destination for vacationers, due to its location where the Danube meets the sea. The accomodations here consit of private rooms or wild camping. Daily boat trips to the nearby lakes or forests are available. or those interested in ecotourism there is a new development in the Crisan village, situated in the middle of the Danube Delta. Fishing and wildlife watching excursions to the surrounding lakes and forests attract more and more visitors. To most people's surprise Crisan has a modern hotel - Lebada - with color tv and phones in every room.
